Boat polishing machines

Compare orbital vs rotary polishers

Orbital polisher

Orbital polisher
  • Best for polishing and buffing
  • Covers large areas very fast
  • Won't overheat gel coat or leave 'comet tails'

Rotary sander-polisher

  • Multi-purpose machine
  • Great for repairs and preparation
  • High speed must be used with care

See our detailed comparisons here

An efficient polishing machine can buff the topsides of a boat in minutes, and makes it practical to maintain a brilliant shine on larger vessels. For professional valeters, they are indispensable.

Orbital polishers

Generally speaking use a large orbital polisher to give the fastest brilliant finish on gel coat. The hand-like action is easily controlled, can't damage the surface and won't run away from the operator.

Rotary sander-polishers

Rotary sander-polishers are general-purpose machines, well suited to repair work, heavy-duty preparation and compounding, but also good for polishing. For work on fibreglass, speed control is essential. See our selection of sander-polishers here. Or read our top tips on machine polishing here.

Power drill sanding and polishing

It is possible to use a power drill as a sander-polisher using appropriate accessories. Make sure speed is kept to a minimum and avoid excess pressure. It is less controllable than a specialised machine but is suitable for the odd small job. See our power drill sanding and polishing kit here.
